ABOUT PLRC

Started in 2009 and certified in 2016, the Pet Loss Resource Center (PLRC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is dedicated to providing pet parents supportive resources as they face the most difficult part of owning a pet - end of life. Our mission is “To give support, guidance, and resources needed to people when a family pet has died or is nearing the end of life”.

The PLRC provides free support to the pet loving community. We have multiple certified Pet Loss Grief Counselor’s with various years of pet experience that work with the groups and individuals directly. We also have a Grief Support Therapist that specializes in the pet and human bond that we can direct you to if your needs may exceed what a group setting can provide.

Not only a resource for pet parents, the PLRC also provides supportive resources for those who care for pets – pet sitters, care takers, and veterinary staff.

Your support is greatly needed. Donations and sponsorship opportunities directly fund the needs of our pet loving community. By supporting the PLRC, you are supporting all of us!

Because of Thor...

From our Founder Mark:

"Thor was my first pet as an adult. He was not just a dog - he was my best friend. Like all friendships, we did not always see eye to eye, but we respected and trusted each other. He was by my side for pivotal life events, and we still share years of memories. When he was thirteen, he started showing signs of old age, and I knew that he was nearing the end of his journey. Like most pet parents, this was not something I wanted to think about or plan for. I had not been taught how to handle this stage - but I realized it was my responsibility as his parent and friend. I knew I owed him a dignified and honorable departure; and so I began my search.

In 2006, I opened the doors to Memorial Pet Services, Wisconsin's first professional pet loss center - with Thor by my side. Just a few months later, his time had come. This was a difficult stage, because it was clear he needed my help to finally transition. I know he was ready, but the decision was difficult, and it still remains hard to accept to this day. As we said our final tearful goodbyes, I hugged him and laid by his side. This was an extremely tough day in my life.

As time passed and I thought about my own experiences, I knew I needed to do more than provide an ethical cremation center, but offer emotional support for grieving pet parents and veterinary professionals. I am happy to say that the Pet Loss Resource Center (PLRC) was founded - a nonprofit dedicated to supporting & caring for the pet community of Wisconsin."
